Holograph manuscript diary begun when Borup and her husband departed Sing Sing, New York, for San Antonio, Texas, where Lieutenant Borup served in the United States Army, 2nd Artillery Regiment. Borup describes travel by train through Chicago and St. Louis to San Antonio and her life in the military camp near San Antonio during 1878-1879. In 1879 she moved to Frankford Arsenal, Philadelphia, with her husband, who had been promoted to first lieutenant. The diary describes the social life of military families in San Antonio and Philadelphia and refers to news of Borup's family and her visits to Sing Sing. Affixed to the inside cover and laid in are clippings and notes relating Borup and members of her family, newspaper clippings announcing Benjamin Brandreth's death in 1880, and a photograph of Brandreth's business office with three unidentified men.

May Watson Brandreth Borup was a granddaughter of Benjamin Brandreth, a physician and manufacturer of patent medicines in Sing Sing, New York. She married Harry Borup, a graduate of West Point and officer in the United States Army Artillery, in 1877.
